The second winter in the cabin was warmer than the first, probably because we had carefully sealed the air leaks during the summer. That spring, the heavy snowfall of December slowly melted by mid-May, and the migrating birds that landed on the lake arrived later than usual.
In April, we built a small balcony off the loft. The balcony was built quickly because the ceiling of the room that was to become the sauna was already there as a foundation under the balcony. It was designed with the theme of “wabi-sabi” so that the view of nature could be enjoyed from the balcony. There are silver fork and spoon wind chimes (handmade by Ryan’s family) that play softly when swung in the breeze, ornaments made from wrought iron instead of fencing, and in the video they are sitting on chairs, but the chairs were removed to create a space to sit and relax on cushions.
Late May is a busy time for preparing the fields and flower beds. This year we planted another cherry tree, a larch with golden fall leaves, and Icelandic and Himalayan poppies in the flower beds. In the field we planted perennial strawberries, lettuce and brussels sprouts, peppers and tomatoes. We’ll see if they grow well.
2年目の冬のキャビンは、夏の間に隙間をせっせと塞いだこともあってか、1年目の冬よりも、温かく過ごすことができました。今年の春は、12月に降った大雪が5月の中旬になるまでゆっくりと解け、湖に降り立つ渡り鳥たちも、いつもより遅くやってきました。
4月、ロフトから出られる小さいなバルコニーを作りました。バルコニーの下は、サウナになる予定の部屋の天井が土台としてすでにあるので、すぐにできてしまいました。バルコニーから自然の景色を楽しめるように、「侘寂」をテーマに作ったそうです。風に揺られると、優しく響く銀のフォークやスプーンのウィンドチャイム（ライアンの家族の手作り）、柵の代わりに鍛治で作った飾り、ビデオでは、いすに座っていますが、いすはなくして座布団に座ってくつろぐ空間にしました。
5月の下旬は、畑や花壇の準備に忙しい時期です。今年は、チェリーの木をもう一本、黄金に紅葉するカラマツ、花壇には、アイスランドポピー、ヒマラヤポピーなどを植えました。畑には、毎年、収穫できるようにと多年生のイチゴ、レタスと芽キャベツ、パプリカ、トマトを植えました。上手く育つかな。
